German Medical Engineering GmbH joins the Thomas Group

Medtech company aims to achieve sustainable growth through the backing of its new owner

The Erlangen-based medtech company German Medical Engineering (GME) is as of now a subsidiary of the Herdorf-based Thomas Group, a leading manufacturer of innovative actuator and hydraulic solutions. Together, the companies aim to strategically develop GME’s business of innovative therapeutic laser and light systems.

With the acquisition of GME, Thomas is entering a new business segment. The portfolio of the provider of mechatronic solutions for the mobility and off-highway markets is now being expanded to include innovative solutions for laser and light therapy under the GME brand, which will remain independent.

GME, which was founded in 2011, also expects great opportunities from the acquisition by Thomas. With its market-relevant products, GME is firmly established in the healthcare sector. The company’s therapeutic light systems are used worldwide for the professional treatment of acute skin conditions such as rosacea, acne and alopecia areata, as well as for scar correction and other dermatological treatments. GME’s products are also used to treat autoimmune skin diseases such as psoriasis, neurodermatitis or vitiligo, as well as actinic keratoses.

The collaboration with the Thomas Group generates synergies that will enable GME to grow sustainably and organically while keeping up the pace of innovation as well as expanding core competencies. For example, Thomas will support its subsidiary GME in selected central functions as well as global sales and marketing activities to expand existing markets and even enter new ones. There is also joint potential for further development of the product portfolio and manufacture. This step is significant, as GME’s 20-strong team has so far handled sales in German-speaking countries on its own, while 50 distributors have ensured the company’s global presence.

“As a part of the Thomas Group, we benefit from the global presence of this recognized high-tech supplier. We can open up new markets and invest more time and energy in the further development of our product portfolio,” says Dr. Stefan Schulze, Managing Director of GME. “We are also a great fit as a company. Like us, Thomas develops technologies to improve people’s lives while focusing on well-defined values. We are delighted that our therapeutic solutions will provide even more people with relief or even a cure in the future as a part of the Thomas Group.”

Dr. Stefan Schulze remains in his role of Managing Director of German Medical Engineering GmbH, while co-founder Dr. Dietmar Fischer, with his many years of experience in the field of laser and light systems, will continue to stay with the company as Technical Director of the R&D department. The renowned Harvard professor Dr. Dieter Manstein will also continue to support GME with his expertise as a Clinical Consultant.
